This engaging one-day workshop equips social studies teachers with tools to transform natural disasters into teachable moments that seamlessly integrate into their curriculum. Participants will explore the economic way of thinking to uncover common threads in disasters, from the Black Death to Hurricane Katrina, and apply these insights to current events. The workshop features interactive lessons that address compassionate questions like "Are disasters good for the economy?" and "What can markets and governments do when disaster strikes?" Through case studies and hands-on activities, educators will gain practical strategies for teaching economic reasoning in history, economics, and other social studies disciplines.

SC Economics teams with the Foundation for Teaching Economics (FTE)! Instructors Amanda Stiglbauer and Austin Green will guide teachers through the SC Economics Standards to help refresh content knowledge and bring excitement to teaching economics. This program will introduce teachers to classroom-tested simulations, interactive lectures, and practical debriefs to enrich their understanding of economic principles. Whether you are a new economics teacher or an experienced AP or GenEd economics teacher, this workshop has something for everyone.  Join us for a day filled with proven activities that dive into supply and demand, comparative economic systems, elections, deficit and the national debt, and issues in international trade.

Unlocking South Carolina's Global Gateways

This workshop offers valuable insight for educators about the practical aspects of international trade with a specific emphasis on South Carolina’s importance in the global economy. The workshop will focus on South Carolina’s economy and business landscape, enabling educators to create related lessons consistent with the Profile of the SC Graduate Competencies. Held at the iconic Nickelodeon Theatre in Columbia, SC, the workshop will also feature the film Cotton Road, created by USC professor Dr. Laura Kissel and depicting South Carolina cotton’s global journey from growth to clothing production and sale in local retail stores. Following the film, renowned international business experts from the University of South Carolina will answer educators’ questions in a panel discussion after the film to strengthen connections. By the end of the workshop, educators will be prepared to engage students with a deeper understanding of South Carolina’s economic evolution and national implications. 


This workshop will focus on grades 6-12, but is open to all SC teachers. The topic of globalization and the evolving business environment is relevant to the Profile of the SC Graduate Core Competencies and connects to many secondary core and exploratory subject areas such as Social Studies (e.g., Geography, U.S. History, Economics, American Government), ELA (e.g., choice of informational texts, critical thinking, discussion and debate of current events), and Business Education.

Careers & Culture: Exploring Jobs through Children's Literature

Spark interest in real-world careers through beloved children’s books. Join us for a lively workshop in which you’ll explore and create ways to captivate students’ minds while fostering a love for learning as you weave tales into your curriculum. Focusing on award-winning children’s literature about careers including entrepreneurship, participants will have the opportunity to review various lesson plans and brainstorm ways they could utilize these stories in their classrooms. Each participant will receive a copy of each book discussed in the workshop. Held at the University of South Carolina’s Cocky’s Reading Express library, this workshop promises to be an active learning experience for educators across SC! 


This workshop will focus on elementary grades, but is open to all SC teachers. The topic of careers is a part of SC standards (ES, MS, HS), and connects to all subject areas. Engage students of all ages and interests by using picture books to help them consider possible careers for life after school!

The Economics of Sports

This workshop introduces core economic concepts through the world of America’s Favorite Pastime: baseball. The sports industry provides fascinating, real-world examples of economics, personal finance, and business that are sure to capture students’ attention. This workshop takes place at Columbia’s Segra Park, home to the beloved Fireflies baseball team. The workshop will tie fundamental economic concepts such as supply and demand, incentives, comparative advantage, and more to the topic of baseball and provide interactives educators can use in their classrooms the very next day. 

Participants have the option of attending that evening’s ballgame at Segra Park at no additional cost.

SMG InvestQuest is SIFMA Foundation’s newest free, fun, and informative investing experience emphasizing diversification and long-term investing over a simulated 5-year period at beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels. Join us on August 29, 2023 for our in-person workshop in Columbia, SC! During this hands-on workshop, you will learn more about this new resource, the original Stock Market Game, and investing basics to be able to enter your students in this exciting contest.

Bus Tour: South Carolina Ports

ThursdayJuly 20, 2023 8 am - 4 pm

Join SC Economics on Thursday, July 20th as we take a group of teachers to visit the South Carolina Ports in Charleston, SC. The tour will include transportation to and from Columbia, a tour of the Wando-Welch Terminal, informational sessions from several SC Ports employees, classroom application and resources by SC Economics, lunch, and 8 recertification credit. Understanding Global Economic Issues

Why do people trade – across city lines, state lines, or national borders?  Are we better off with or without trade?  Will trade hurt or benefit certain groups of people?  How do some nations try to distort trade patterns? These questions and many more are incorporated into the various lessons and case studies that serve as the basis for Understanding Global Economic Issues lead by Don Fell of the Foundation for Teaching Economics.  Teachers who attend will receive resources, lunch, up to 5 hours of recertification credit, a substitute reimbursement sent to your school, and a $100 incentive.
