Students from across the state participated in the 2008 Fall and 2009 Spring SC Stock Market Game (SMG) competitions. The teams played either the “Traditional” version of the game or the “Hootie” version. In the Traditional version, the teams are given $100,000 of hypothetical money to invest in any publicly traded company on the three U.S. stock exchanges. In the Hootie & the Blowfish Take Stock in South Carolina version, students are given $100,000 of hypothetical money to invest in 75 companies significant to South Carolina’s economy. During a ten-week period, the teams research the companies, learn what it means to buy on margin, and do all their trading online.
