The SC Council on Economic EducationElects New Board Members
Six business
leaders from around South Carolina joined SCCEE’s Board of Directors in January.
Taking over the position of chairman of the Board is Chuck Garnett, President
and CEO of NBSC. The new members are—
Michael R. Brenan
Group President of South Carolina
BB&T
Mike is the BB&T
Group President for all of South Carolina, which includes the Coastal, Upstate
and Midlands Regions and also serves as the Regional President for the Midlands
Region. He graduated with a BA in Economics from Bowling Green State University.
Mike’s entire career has been in banking and he has been with BB&T since 1998.
He serves on the boards of the United Way of the Midlands, United Way
Association of South Carolina, Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics
Foundation, Moore School of Business, President’s Advisory Council at Clemson
University, South Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities Foundation, and
the Palmetto Health Foundation.
Daniel R. D'AlbertoAssociateNelson Mullins
Riley & Scarborough LLP
Dan practices in the areas of patent litigation,
business litigation, and electronic discovery. In 2008, he received the Nelson
Mullins Renaissance Associate Award given to one associate firmwide who best
demonstrated achievement in client service, training, pro bono, marketing,
recruiting, and productivity. Dan earned a Juris Doctor from the University of
South Carolina’s School of Law in 2005; a Master of Science in Higher Education
Administration from Florida State University in 2000; and a Bachelor of Arts
degree in Political Science from the University of South Carolina Honors College
in 1997. Prior to joining the firm, Dan served as a development officer for the
University of South Carolina and Johns Hopkins University.
Alan B. Kahn
Chairman, M. B. Kahn Construction CompanyPresident, Kahn Development Company
Since 1968 Alan has been president of Kahn Development, a company focused on the
development of real estate properties in a number of states, with an emphasis on
lifestyle and mixed-use retail. Since 1965 Alan has been associated with M. B.
Kahn Construction Company, the 106th largest building firm in the United States,
specializing in industrial, commercial and institutional construction. He has
served on numerous boards including Bank of America, Columbia Jewish Federation,
and the Salvation Army. His awards include the Order of the Palmetto from the
State of South Carolina, the Lyre Award for contributions to the Arts in the
City of Columbia, and Israel’s 40th Anniversary Award from the State of Israel
Bonds Committee..
Sharon MannChief Financial OfficerGeneral Information
Services, Chapin
Sharon has over 16 years of experience in finance and
accounting in both the background screening and healthcare industries. Sharon
works closely with new product development to streamline costs and production to
maintain the most competitive pricing and partnership agreements that are
favorable to GIS customers. A CPA for over 16 years, Sharon has been with GIS
almost eight years. She graduated from the University of South Carolina with a
degree in accounting.
Marilyn Moore MesserSenior Vice President, Human
ResourcesWorld Acceptance Corporation
Marilyn has been senior vice president
for human resources at the World Acceptance Corporation corporate office located
in Greenville, South Carolina, since 2004. World Acceptance is an international
corporation that makes small consumer loans. They have more than 3,500 employees
in 975+ offices in 11 U.S. states and Mexico. Prior to her employment with World
Acceptance, Marilyn worked in human resources at Roper Industries, Inc., in
Duluth, Georgia, McKechnie in Easley, SC, and Aldridge, England, and Carolina
First Bank, among other companies.
Walter Gerald "Jerry" StevensSenior Vice

Jerry is Senior Vice President and Area Executive with
CapitalBank in Greenwood, S.C., where he has worked since 1999. Prior to that,
he was a vice president with NBSC in Columbia and Camden, S.C. Jerry has served
on numerous boards including the SCBA Young Bankers, Independent Bankers of SC
(IBSC), Red Cross, chairman of the Self Regional Healthcare Hospital, treasurer
of Greenwood Chamber of Commerce, and is a member of the Greenwood Rotary Club.
In 2004, Jerry was named Young Banker of the Year by the SC Bankers Association
and in 2009 Jerry was presented the Leadership Award for bankers by the IBSC. In
