Workshops and Seminars

The South Carolina Council on Economic Education offers workshops that give teachers a foundation in important economic concepts and financial literacy.

Teachers learn economic terms and gain an understanding of how they fit in the context of our State’s Social Studies Standards. SCCEE will work with school districts to ensure that teachers receive the economic
materials free of charge.

More than 1,000 teachers participate in our training programs, and we now offer adult learning seminars in personal finance that are open to the public as well as teachers.

Basic Economics
K-5 teachers

This program prepares K-5 teachers for the new Social Studies academic standards developed in 2005 by the State Department of Education. Teachers will learn basic economic concepts and participate in lesson demonstrations such as His Barter is Worse Than His Bite, To Market To Market, and Supply and Demand at the Gold Rush.

Fe-Fi-Fo-Fum: Making Economics Fun for the Diverse Learner
economics teachers

Whether you’re a new economics teacher or a seasoned veteran, teachers will enjoy learning how SCCEE’s activity-based lessons can be used to teach economics to ALL students…and boost their confidence in the subject matter. Learn how to use games, role plays and other hands-on activities that make economic concepts relevant to a young person’s life.

Financial Fitness for Life
K-5 teachers

Young children are hands-on learners and teachers will learn to use concrete experiences and stories about children like themselves to teach personal finance and economic concepts. Even the youngest students understand how their decisions are important. The curriculum, available in English and Spanish, includes a student workout book, teacher’s guide, parent guide, test examiner’s manual, and CD-Rom containing the entire K-12 curriculum to reproduce the activities.

Financial Fitness for Life
middle and high school teachers

Teachers learn to “coach” their students to become skilled consumers, savers and investors. Middle-grades materials engage students in abstract thinking and give them some adult tasks. High-school lessons appeal to teens’ growing sense of autonomy as they begin to take responsibility for their lives. The curriculum, available in English and Spanish, includes a student workout book, teacher’s guide, parent guide, test examiner’s manual, and CD-Rom containing the entire K-12 curriculum to reproduce the activities.

Financial Fitness Institute
This two-day “workout” prepares teachers to become their students’ personal financial fitness trainers. The agenda covers financial topics such as credit and debt collections, financial planning, banking basics, wealth building, taxes, consumer fraud, media literacy and more.

Huffing and Puffing Through Economics: Using Children’s Literature to Teach Economics
K-5 teachers

This program gives teachers a better understanding of economic concepts, the skills to identify the concepts in literature, and the knowledge of how economics can be used to make history and other subjects come alive in the classroom.

Learning, Earning and Investing:
A Comprehensive Investor Education Curriculum
teachers of grades 4-12

This program introduces students, and their teachers, to the world of investing, the benefits and strategies for investing in the long term. Lessons cover basics such as the language of financial markets, reading the financial pages, and stocks, bonds and mutual funds. This is a multi-faceted curriculum including a print book and companion website with interactive games, downloadable PowerPoint visuals, glossary and assessments.

Stock Market Game Advisor Training
teachers of grades 4-12

This program shows teachers how to help their students learn from the market. In the 10-week stock trading Game, students apply research and math skills, practice group decision making, and analyze cause-and-effect relationships.

Wide World of Trade
middle school teachers

This workshop teaches the basics of international trade and finance and provides insight into how the world of international trade works. Teachers learn to use The Wide World of Trade, a set of 11 lessons that show middle school students the interdependence of economies around the globe.

The Economics Classroom
teachers of high school economics

This video workshop from Annenberg/CPB gives a solid foundation for teaching high school economics. The one-hour sessions teach basic economic concepts and theory, review national standards, provide lesson plans and demonstrate classroom strategies. The videos include footage of real classrooms and are supplemented by a print guide and website. The series is offered through ITV for one hour recertification or 20 credit renewal points.

Virtual Economics™
K-12 teachers

Virtual Economics™ is designed to be used by K-12 teachers as a refresher in basic economic concepts as well as a comprehensive library of economic lessons. This CD-Rom includes links to over 30,000 pages of the best instructional materials for economics and financial literacy and a correlation to South Carolina’s new Social Studies academic standards.
