2008 Merrill Lynch Young Entrepreneur Award Winners

Five South Carolina students have been named winners of the 2008 Merrill Lynch Young Entrepreneur Award in recognition of their keen financial know-how and entrepreneurial spirit in starting and operating their own businesses.

The students are Amelia Baxley, an 11th grade student at A.C. Flora High School in Columbia (Richland One); Patrick Hutchison, a 10th grade student at Hammond School;
Daniel Mollo, a senior at Fox Creek High School in North Augusta (Edgefield County School District); and Haleigh Payne, an 8th grade student at Rosemary Middle School in Andrews (Georgetown County School District).

The students were interviewed on the ETV Stock Market Program which is broadcast to schools statewide over ETV's closed-circuit network. The program is produced in conjunction with the Merrill Lynch South Carolina Stock Market Game and sponsored by SCCEE.

“Merrill Lynch is proud to sponsor this awards program to recognize these phenomenally talented young people,” said Jeff Adams, Director of the Merrill Lynch complex in Columbia. “This award and other Council programs give South Carolina students excellent learning experiences that will motivate them to become the next generation of investors and entrepreneurs.”

SCCEE President Helen Meyers echoed Adams’ remarks. “The Merrill Lynch Young Entrepreneurs are good role models who have figured out how to put honest money into their pockets” said Meyers. “And through the ETV program, they share ideas with other students on how to start and run a business, how to keep track of inventory, and how to know if they are making a profit -- skills they’ll need to become business owners, workers and investors.”

Winners of the Merrill Lynch Young Entrepreneur  Award receive a $200 cash prize and will be honored at a May 8, 2008 awards luncheon hosted annually by Merrill Lynch and SCCEE  in Columbia.
